Bali Rai was born in Leicester. He graduated with a degree in Politics and worked in various jobs before becoming an author. His first novel, (Un)Arranged Marriage was shortlisted for several awards including the North East Book Award 2001 and the Lancashire Book Award 2002 and also won the Leicester Book of the Year Award, the Angus Book Award and the Stockport Schools Book Award in 2002.
He says: ‘I know a lot of Asian kids who don't read books. I guess it's because they don't think their concerns are addressed to them. I want to tackle that.'
