Author description

John Agard is the acclaimed poet, playwright and author of more than 50 bodies of work. He grew up in Georgetown, British Guiana (now Guyana) and learnt a love of words and language through studies in English, French and Latin. He worked in libraries and taught languages whilst beginning to publish his own work. His awards include the 1997 Paul Hamlyn Award for Poetry, the Cholmondeley Award in 2004 and the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 2012.
